The way that you were treated makes me so angry! You never should have been treated like that. I encourage you to submit a formal complaint to the hospital. You didn’t weigh that much. I don’t know your height, but no matter what mid 200’s has nothing to do with the ability to birth. You deserved so much better!

This made me so sad to read- I’m sorry for the negative experience that you had and for the way people treated you. I have had 4 vaginal births all while being over 200 lbs. An automatic repeat C-Section is ridiculous. It is your body and you can do whatever you like with it. I’d highly recommend a second, or third opinion. If you are healthy then you don’t even need an OB- they specialize in high risk pregnancies, not normal birth.

Women, you do not have to put up with shitty providers! If the practice isn’t treating you well, find another! (I understand there are restrictions due to insurance, etc., but most people have more than one option.)

Mama, this Story broke my heart. Like you, I am plus sized and felt like I had to jump through hoops for my labor. I had to be seen by anesthesia when I was 30 weeks to make sure they could do s spinal. I was at the hospital for pre-e checkups weekly (though I never once showed signs in bloodwork) and when they “couldn’t get a good enough reading” because i was “too big” for the babies heart monitor when I was in labor, they inserted an internal monitor which was 100xs more painful than any part of labor or delivery. But after 96 hours of labor and 15 minutes of pushing my baby girl was born with zero complications due to my weight.

Best of luck with baby #2. And please, for the love of god, find a new ob!

As a mother, doula and a plus-size woman i am so sad for your birth memory Hillary. No woman deserves to be treated that way. I started my pregnancy at just under 300lbs, and just before my son’s birth I think I topped out at 337lbs. So, you definitely didn’t break any weight records. I find under-educated and RUDE physicians to be the bane of the existence of natural vaginal births. As for VBAC’s that rule is up to the hospital as far as I know, but depending where you are that changes. (I am in Edmonton, Canada) Thank you for sharing, and I hope you have a better birth memory the second time around.

I am so sory that happened to you mama! I was angry and frustrated for you as I read this. It is never ok to treat another human being this way. It sickens me to think so many people feel so entitled to act this way.

Thats so hard to read. Its such a shame that doctors can be like that. What’s sad is that most of the women i know that are “normal/average” size are the ones that have the complications. They need to start looking outside the box. As a nurse, im sadden to hear how your doctors nurse treated you…she doesn’t deserve her license. Congrats on baby #2 but I would say look around before you give into another csection. Best of luck to you!

So many things about this upset me. It upsets me that doctors make good money and yet some can’t afford the patience that somebody like me, a former teacher, could give to a classroom of kindergartners for pennies compared to what they would make. It upsets me that people who should be entering this business for the love and compassion of humanity take advantage of their titles and abuse them. But mostly it upsets me because what happened to you happens to a lot of women and that is sad.

Damn! Not only disrespectful but.. Geez.

No the rule isn’t no VBAC before 2 years, 12 months yes, 18 months is sort of iffy but they should give you a trail of labor. And yes fat moms VBAC. I don’t recommend it if you can avoid it but my first VBAC was 18 months after my oldest was born, and I weigh above 300lbs – no one ever spoke to me that way, they were direct about my weight (yes I am obese, I know that and I am not going to kid around) but you don’t want another c-section if you can help it especially because of your weight (increased complications because of second surgery and increased complications from obesity).

I am so sorry you had to go through with that, no idea why folks feel that fat means okay to ridicule.

I am shocked and appalled to hear of the horrendous treatment you received! This is just unbelievable to me. I too was over weight but nobody ever treated me with such insensitivity! I thought I had it bad because I had to have two c-sections. I am so very sorry your pregnancy and birthing experience has so many negative memories attached to it. Your baby is beautiful. Congratulate yourself on creating a perfect, beautiful human being.
