Attention to weight bias in maternity care is growing.
Perinatal education hasn’t caught up.

  • What Professionals Are Noticing

This course has been crafted with compassion and a depth of knowledge that would benefit anyone who works with birthing people. I came away from the course looking at my Labor and Delivery unit differently — I immediately started to see how furniture in our waiting area and our bathrooms might not work for every body who comes through our doors. I also feel more committed to supporting my patients in taking care of their postpartum bodies. I am going to recommend this course to all my colleagues!
    Molly, RN
    Labor & Delivery Nurse
  • As a thin ally, this course informed me of some of the obstacles individuals face and provided me with tools to feel confident advocating for those concerned about how body size may impact their care.
    Margaret M. Quinlan, Ph.D.
    Professor & Researcher, UNC Charlotte
  • This teaching module was incredibly thorough and thoughtful. It is accessible to anyone working in any aspect of pregnancy care, and I wish it would become required continuing education for all pregnancy care providers!

Size-Friendly Birth Course FAQs

If you’re wondering whether this course is the right fit, the FAQs below address the most common questions we receive.

This course is designed for perinatal and maternity care professionals who want structured, evidence-informed education on weight bias, BMI, and size-inclusive care.

It was created for doulas, midwives, nurses, physicians, childbirth educators, lactation professionals, clinic leaders, and educators working across pregnancy, birth, and postpartum settings.

The Size-Friendly Birth Course supports both individual practitioners and teams who want to align care practices, reduce harm related to weight bias, and provide more respectful, consistent care for higher-weight patients.

This course may not be a good fit for professionals who are unwilling to examine weight bias in maternity care or who are not open to reflecting on how bias can influence clinical decision-making, communication, and patient experience.

The course emphasizes respectful, inclusive language and evidence-based care for people of all body sizes, genders, and family structures. If you are uncomfortable engaging with inclusive language or with care models that center patient dignity and autonomy, this course may feel challenging.

This training is intended for those who are ready to learn, reflect, and apply size-inclusive principles in practice.

This course is tailored for birth professionals at any stage in their career, from doulas just beginning their journey to seasoned labor and delivery nurses or OBGYNs. No specific prerequisites or prior knowledge is required, making it accessible to all levels of experience within the maternity care field.
